Author’s Note: While your drone build should work correctly if you have followed the instructions in Chapters 4 and 5, there is the possibility that one or more pre-arm checks prevent you from actually flying. If this is the case, consult the pre-arm faults so you can resolve them.
We used Mission Planner to set up our drone. Now we are going to look at how we can use it to resolve any issues and also assess what went wrong should the drone suddenly crash or behave improperly.
Having spent a good deal of money on the drone, the last thing you want is to have a “flyaway” the first time you connect the battery. To help prevent this, Pixhawk uses a range of pre-arm safety checks. These checks cover a wide variety of things such a bad sensors and missed calibration, plus a whole host of other issues including compass alignment. While these checks are important and help prevent crashes and flyaways, most can be disabled if necessary (though that is not advised at this early stage).
Once your drone is assembled and calibrated, you would expect to be able to fly it. When we come to the pre-arm checks in Wizard and all is green, then you should have no problem. However, experience has shown me that you might come across several pre-arm checks that prevent flight. You will discover something is wrong when it comes to arming your drone and there is no response and the LED is flashing yellow. Let’s take a look at pre-arm checks and how we can resolve any issues.
You will need to connect your drone to Mission Planner using a USB cable or telemetry. For this I use a large 10-foot (3-meter) USB cable that allows me to place the drone in a position where it can get a good GPS signal. Press the Connect button in the upper right corner and then switch on your RC transmitter before pulling the left-hand stick fully down and to the right in an attempt to arm the drone.
